When I participated in the World Social Forum for Latin America on April 15 in Rio de Janeiro, I enquired: faced with the present financial crisis, what should be saved, capitalism or humanity?  The answer, apparently, is obvious. Why the adverb ”apparently? It is very simple: many believe that there is no future for humanity without capitalism. But has it had a past?

Although I am against abortion I must admit that in certain cases such as rape it should not be considered a criminal offence and I do not endorse the position of the archbishop of Olinda and Recife who demanded that a child of nine years of age should carry her unwanted pregnancy (with serious risks to her physical state, for her mental state is already damaged) excommunicating those who helped her terminate it.

When capitalism prioritised the accumulation of capital to the detriment of human rights and of environmental balance it installed brutal social inequality on the planet and promoted environmental devastation. Today 80% of the world™s industrial production is absorbed by only 20% of the population residing in the wealthier countries of the Northern hemisphere.

Os EUA, que abrigam apenas 5% da populaçáo mundial, consomem 30% dos recursos do planeta!

Tive a oportunidade de ler a ˜Carta aos Judeus™, de autoria de meu amigo pessoal Frei Beto. Aliás, uma grande coincidência, pois durante estas férias de final de ano, levei comigo para leitura, seu livro ˜Cartas de Prisáo™, com o qual o próprio Frei Beto me presenteou neste Natal de 2008.
