Suppose there was a bar at the corner of your street sheltering suspects of having assaulted houses in the neighbourhood. As a preventative measure you try to infiltrate a detective amongst them in order to protect your family. The police, with an eye on the scoundrels, identify the detective. Instead of arresting the thieves they jail the one who infiltrated…

This is what happened with five Cubans who, monitored by the Cuban intelligence services, infiltrated into anti Castro groups in Florida which were responsible for 681 terrorist attempts against Cuba resulting in the murder of 3478 people and causing serious injuries to another 2099.

Cubans Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González, Gerardo Hernández and Ramon Labañino have been in prison in the USA since September 1998. The fifth, René González, condemned to 15 years, was given conditional freedom on 7th October 2011 mainly because he has dual nationality (American and Cuban) and is forbidden from leaving the country.

The rest are serving heavy sentences: Hernández was condemned to a double life sentence plus 15 years in prison… he would require three lives in order to serve such an absurd sentence. Labañino was condemned to life plus 18 years, Guerrero to life plus 10 years and Fernando to 19 years.

The five belonged to Rede Vespa which provided Havana with information regarding terrorists who, by air or disguised as tourists, practised attempts against Cuba, smuggled arms and set off explosives in Havana hotels causing injuries and deaths.

Bush and Obama should be grateful to the Cuban government for identifying the terrorists who use American territory to attack the socialist Caribbean island with impunity. However, what happens is the opposite, as revealed in the well documented book by Fernando Morais. The FBI arrested the Cuban agents and continues to ignore the terrorists who promote clandestine aerial incursions over Cuba and pursue armed training in Miami’s surrounding areas.

In 15 chapters, Morais’ book tells how Cuban security prepares its security agents; the saga of the Salvadorian mercenary who received soldier’s pay from Miami and placed five bombs in hotels and restaurants in Havana; the role of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, as carrier pigeon, in the exchange of correspondence between Fidel Castro and Bill Clinton; the secret visit of FBI agents to Havana and the volume of proof against Cuban Miami offered to them under Fidel’s orders.

“The Cold War’s Last Soldiers” is the result of exhaustive research and interviews by the author in Cuba, USA and Brazil. Written in easy style, with no ideological adjectives or considerations, the book proves why Cuba has resisted for over 50 years as the only socialist country in the West: the Revolution and its social victories inspire in the population a sense of sovereignty which induces it to preserve them as a gesture of love.

For those who, thanks to the biological lottery, were born into families in a social class immune from misery and poverty in capitalist countries, it is difficult to understand why the Cubans do not rebel against the authorities who govern them. Now, when one lives in a country only 140 Km away from the greatest military, economic and ideological power in history which has blocked it for half a century, to resist for so long and even deserve the praises of John Paul II during his visit in 1998 is a matter of pride.

There are Cuban doctors and teachers involved in the service of solidarity in poor areas in more than 100 countries including Brazil. The number of deserters is minimal, considering the amount of professionals who, once their tour of duty is over, return to Cuba. And the Revolution, as happens now under the government of Raul Castro, has tried to modernise so as not to perish.

Perhaps this large outdoor poster found close to Havana airport and mentioned frequently by Fernando Morais can help to understand the civic conscience of a people who struggled to free themselves from being a colony first from Spain and then from the USA: “Tonight 200 million children will sleep on the streets of the world. Not one of them is Cuban”.

*Frei Betto is a writer, author of “Diario de Fernando – nos carceres da ditadura militar brasileira” (Fernando’s Diary – in the prisons of the Brazilian military dictatorship) (Rocco). http://www.freibetto.org/> twitter: @freibetto

Kuba: Bemerkenswertes öffentliches Desinteresse an US-finanzierter “Dissidenten”-Gruppe “Damen in Weiß”.

Frei Betto: http://www.hart-brasilientexte.de/2014/12/27/usa-and-cuba-break-the-ice-frei-betto-brasiliens-wichtigster-katholischer-befreiungstheologe-kuba-und-aktuelle-manipulationstricks-im-deutschen-mainstream-was-alles-in-kuba-artikeln-fehlt/

http://www.hart-brasilientexte.de/2009/04/18/weltwirtschaftsforum-lateinamerika-in-rio-de-janeiro-teilnehmender-befreiungstheologe-frei-betto-analysiert-200-jahre-dominierender-kapitalismus-soziale-resultate-weltweit-aktuelle-finanzkrise-sy/

The re shaping of sexual roles, the instability of marital ties, divorce and re-marriage all help to break up the family group. Children circulate between the various autonomous homes in contact with various adults who give them, as values, so many diverging opinions and attitudes that they become completely convinced that everything is relative.

The crisis in the traditional family model comes from factors such as the emancipation of women who no longer depend on the husband to maintain them, the lessening of paternal authority, the equality between persons, all of which confuses and undermines the old hierarchy of defined roles between grandparents, parents, mothers, children, uncles and aunts.

This fragmenting of the family group disorganises the concept of authority, the exercise of obedience, the old dominant patriarchy. The family is now a functional group exchanging affection and managing economic interests. In it, the specific duties of each one are no longer clear. The rituals of uniting and consolidating such as sharing meals, Sunday church attendance, family holidays, celebrations of birthdays, etc. all go up in smoke if there is no introduction of a new liturgy for bringing the family together.

What is a home today? A place to live in, where everyone acts according to their own personal interests. Instead of the family sitting around the table, there is a fridge providing food, in the place of the sitting room where all gather, each one has their own bedroom to take refuge in, where they can hide and find entertainment with electronic paraphernalia such as the TV and the internet, finding a virtual relationship in the place of sociability based on sharing. Â Â Â

Solitude is no longer a retreat for acts of solidarity and cultural nurturing and becomes a shelter for solitary escape.

Another reason for the disintegration of the traditional family is the power exercised by the television empire. TV is the ”third parent who has a huge role in the bringing up of children and adolescents. It displaces the nucleus of the family from its relation of sharing (conversations around the table, on the porch, the road or the garden, board and card games, music recitals in an improvised theatre etc.) by the gathering everyone around the TV screen.

The real family gives in to the virtual family. In many families there no juxtaposition, there is a TV set in every bedroom, breaking up relationships and making dialogue difficult.

Neo liberal democracy “ based on the acquisition of material goods which allow everyone to evaluate their own freedom according to their proximity or distance from the market “ imposes itself on the family through the TV, annulling the rituals founded on affection and on the complicity of blood ties.

Paternal authority no longer rules in decisions as to what is good or not for the children on the TV. Family discussion does not exist. Each one decides on the time and the content for their voluntary subjection to TV in detriment of family conversation, reading, prayer, entertainment, physical exercise or social development (visiting, going to the club, library, theatre etc.)

Today™s families tend to ignore their relatives, they are not interested in them, however they show great appreciation for their new ”relatives to whom, almost daily, their doors and hearts are open: William Bonner and Fatima Bernardes, Hebe Camargo and Faustáo, Luciano Huck and Luciana Gimenez, Datena and Boris Casoy[1] <#_ftn1> , and the whole Pleiades of heroes and heroines from soap operas, children™s programmes and cartoons.

These new uncles and aunts have the advantage of always being fun and well mannered, they do not try to borrow money, do not drink our drinks nor eat our food, they do not take up any space, do not tell us about their ills, they always look healthy and smiling, they are rich and famous. As the reality is ever more virtual we can even perceive their scent¦

Freud would feel confused if he were to return today. We no longer have a need to ”kill our father or to ”hate our brother. All that is needed is to dial a number which fatally will exclude a ”brother or switch the channel every time that boring man or woman appear on the screen.

Every night millions of TV viewers are unselfishly nourished by this entertainment medley “ soap operas, humorous and sports programmes, etc. “ seasoned with everything which is missing in real life: the great love affair, emotion, challenge, ideals, beauty, the wheel of fortune¦

The vessel travels on. Life continues, inside the TV. On the outside, removed from the role of protagonists or historical subjects, we accept being mere spectators urged to consume. Or better, to disappear together, allowing virtual idols to live for us.

[1] <#_ftnref1> Â All TV personalities, news readers, talk show hosts etc. etc.

*Frei Betto is a writer, author of ”A arte de semear estrelas (The Art of Sowing Stars), (Rocco) http://www.freibetto.org
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Â

He is a Brazilian Dominican with an international reputation as a liberation theologian.

Within Brazil he is equally famous as a writer, with over 52 books to his name. In 1985 he won Brazil™s most important literary prize, the Jabuti, and was elected Intellectual of the Year by the members of the Brazilian Writers™ Union.

Frei Betto has always been active in Brazilian social movements, and has been an adviser to the Church™s ministry to workers in Sáo Paulo™s industrial belt, to the Church base communities, and to the Landless Rural Workers™ Movement (MST).

In 2003-2004, he was Special Adviser to President Lula and Coordinator of Social Mobilisation for the Brazilian Government™s Zero Hunger programme.

DECLARING MY VOTE

Frei Betto*

This year my vote for President of the Republic will go to the candidate who intends to implement the ever promised, but never instituted, agrarian reform, tax reform, political reform and judiciary reform and who will promise that social welfare and labour reforms will not be used as a decoy to penalise workers and pensioners even more by benefitting big business.

I shall vote for those who are prepared to revolutionise health and education. It is shameful that both the public education and health systems have been scrapped. Of the 190 million Brazilians only 30 million hold on with hope to the lifebuoy of private health plans. The rest are treated as second class citizens, self-denying penitents in hospital queues who are obliged to purchase medicines burdened with heavy taxes of approximately 39%.

According to the MEC (Ministry for Education and Culture), there are 4.1 million Brazilians between the ages of 4 and 17 not enrolled in school and have thus virtually entered the world of crime. Our teachers are badly paid, the teaching of computer skills to students is a painful path to be followed and the four-hour school day is the gloss which covers the country with semi illiterates.

I shall vote for the candidate who is prepared to rigourously control carbon gas emissions in industry, pastureland and areas of environmental preservation like Amazonia. We cannot allow agro business to cut down forests, contaminate rivers and permit the use of manual labour unprotected by labour laws or in conditions of slavery.

I will vote for those who commit to surpassing the compensatory nature of the Bolsa Familia (Family Food Hamper) and to recovering the emancipatory Zero Hunger programme thus helping families who survive at the government™s expense to find a way out and to generate their own income.

I shall vote for the candidate who is prepared to change the existing economic policy which in 2008 channeled R$282 billion to pay off the internal and external debt but only R$44.5 billion towards health. In terms of percentages, 30% of the budget was destined to the financial market and only 5% to health, 3% to education and 12% to the entire social area.

I shall vote for the candidate who is contrary to the Central Bank™s autonomy, for economy is not a sphere divorced from politics or from the social process. I vote for the reduction of interest rates, for exemptions for the basic food allowance and for medicines, for a realistic increase in the minimum salary and a reduction to 40 hours in the weekly work day.

I vote for the legalisation and preservation of territories of indigenous peoples, of quilombolas[1] <#_ftn1> and riverine peoples in permanent dialogue with the social movements and I reject any attempt to criminalise these. I vote for initiatives in the economy of solidarity and fair trade and for the constitutional definition for the maximum limit for rural properties.

I vote for the candidate who is convinced that it is necessary to reduce energy tariffs for family consumption and for mobile phone use, who is prepared to give priority to alternative sources of energy such as solar, aeolian, oceanic, from rubbish waste etc. and who is against the construction of thermo electric and hydroelectric plants which harm the environment.

I vote for the candidate who gives priority to quality public transport, with accessible and subsidised prices, who demands the visible identification of generic foodstuffs offered for consumption, forbids the participation and use of children in advertising and vehemently condemns child labour.

I shall vote for the candidate who is determined to install a Truth Commission in order to open the archives of the Armed Forces concerning the period of the dictatorship, to investigate the crimes committed in the name of the State and to reveal the whereabouts of persons who disappeared.

I vote for those who will pursue current foreign policy which strengthens the sovereignty and independence of Brazil, diversifies its commercial relations, supports all forms of Latin American and Caribbean integration without the presence of the USA and the right for our country to have  a seat in the UN Security Council, rejects the USA™s criminal blockade against Cuba and the installation of North American military bases in Latin America. Â

I vote, especially, for whoever presents a programme which is convincing towards a significant reduction of Brazil™s greatest blight: social inequality.

This is my vote.

Now I must find the right candidate.

Churches compete for customers, just as supermarkets do. The difference is that the latter offer cheaper products while the Churches promise to alleviate suffering and to provide spiritual peace, prosperity and salvation.

At the moment there is no confrontation in this competition. But there are explicit prejudices in relation to other religious traditions and particularly to those rooted in African culture such as candomblé, macumba and spiritism.[1] <#_ftn1>

http://www.hart-brasilientexte.de/2008/11/22/ich-bin-christ-und-sehe-mich-als-revolutionar-brasiliens-wichtigster-befreiungstheologe-frei-betto/

Â

If we are not careful now, the demonising of religious expressions which are different to our own can in future result in fundamentalist attitudes such as the ”crusade syndrome – a conviction that, in the name of God, the other must be demoralised and destroyed.

The Catholic Church is the one feeling the most discomfort with the new geography of faith. A former queen never loses her majesty¦ During the past few years the number of Catholics in Brazil decreased by 20% (IBGE “ Brazilian Institute for Geography & Statistics – 2003). Today we are 73.8% of the population. There is nothing to show that we will recover lost ground in the near future.

Like a pachyderm on a busy road, the Catholic Church does not manage to modernise itself. Its pyramidal structure causes everything to move around the figures of bishops and priests. The rest are subordinates. Lay persons are not trained beyond the childish catechism. If we compare the Catholic catechism to the historical Protestant Churches™ Sunday school we will notice the difference in quality.

Children and young Catholics in general have practically no biblical or theological grounding. Therefore it is not rare to find adults who maintain a childish concept of the faith. Their ties to God are close due to guilt rather than to a loving relationship.

Let us consider the predominant structure of the Catholic Church: the parish. Finding a priest who is available at 3pm is almost a miracle. However there are evangelical churches where pastors and workers are on duty all through the night.

I am not hinting at arrogance towards priests. The fact is this: why does the Catholic Church have so few pastors? We all know the reason: contrary to other Churches, she demands heroic virtues from them such as celibacy and she excludes women from access to the priesthood. Such clericalism blocks evangelical dissemination.

The argument that it must be so and continue this way because the Gospel demands it is not sustainable in light of the Bible. Jesus™ main apostle, Peter, was married (Mark 1:29-31) and the first female apostle was the Samaritan woman (John 4:28-29).

As long as the deconstruction of the Second Vatican Council (which was held in order to renew the Catholic Church) is not stopped, the laity will continue to be second class faithful. Many do not have a vocation to celibacy but do to the priesthood, as seen in the Anglican and Lutheran Churches.

Even if Rome insists on strengthening clericalism and celibacy (in spite of frequent scandals), who can name an effervescent parish? They do exist but, unfortunately, they are rare. In general Catholic churches are closed from Monday to Friday (why not take advantage of the space for courses or community activities?), masses are uninteresting, sermons without content. Where are the bible courses, youth groups, adult lay education, meditation exercises and voluntary works?

In which middle class parish do the poor feel at home? One only needs to go into an Evangelical church even in higher class neighbourhoods, to see how many simple people one finds there.

As a matter of fact the Evangelical Churches know how to deal with communications skills, including open TV. One could discuss the content of their programmes and methods for attracting the faithful. They know how to speak a language that the people understand and, therefore, reach a large audience.

The Catholic Church tries to reach the faithful with its ”show masses[2] <#_ftn2> , aerobic priests and singers and imported spiritualist movements with a European context. This makes a spectacle of the sacred and speaks to feelings and emotion but not to reason. It is the seed falling on rocky ground (Mt. 13:20-21).

I don™t want to run the risk of being hard on my own Church. It is not true that she has not found new ways. She has found them, in the Basic Church Communities (CEBs). However they are not very well thought of because they threaten clericalism.

Actually, the CEBs will be holding their 12th inter ecclesial meeting between July 21 and 25 2009 in Porto Velho in the state of Roraima. The theme is ”Ecology and Mission and the motto is ”From the womb of the Earth, the cry rises from Amazonia. More than 3000 representatives from all over Brazil are expected to attend.

How good it would be to see Pope Benedict XVI attending this profoundly Pentecostal event.

Frei Betto

[2] <#_ftnref2>  ”Show masses attract large numbers of people and are often televised.

*Frei Betto is a writer and author, together with Leonardo Boff of ”Mística e Espiritualidade (Mystique and Spirituality) (Garamond), he is a Brazilian Dominican with an international reputation as a liberation theologian.  Within Brazil he is equally famous as a writer, with over 52 books to his name.  In 1985 he won Brazil™s most important literary prize, the Jabuti, and was elected Intellectual of the Year by the members of the Brazilian Writers™ Union.
