„Through the backdoor“ – Frei Betto

Freitag, 18. Juli 2008 von Klaus Hart

In this unequal world where the majority of those who were created ”in the divine likeness must survive condemned to inhumanity, we are surprised by the cinematographic eye of Walter Salles. He entered by the back door where the disowned, the anonymous, those who suffer life are to be found. His most recent film ”Linha de PasseÂ Â won the best actress award for Sandra Corveloni in Cannes this year.

„Two woman and a tragedy“ – Frei Betto

Freitag, 18. Juli 2008 von Klaus Hart

Lilian Gonzaga da Costa, 43, who works as a cleaner, had probably never been to the theatre to watch a play by Sophocles nor did she know who Antigone was. In spite of the two women being separated by 26 centuries what they have in common is loving devotion to their families, a sense of justice and wanting the right of the living to mourn their dead.

Antigone decided to ignore the orders of the powerful Creon, king of Thebes, and buried her brother Polynices whose corpse the king had demanded should remain unburied, exposed to carrion birds and dogs, so that the horror of it would inhibit other pretenders to the throne.

„From the virtual to the spiritual world“ – Frei Betto, Befreiungstheologe, Brasilien.

Freitag, 18. Juli 2008 von Klaus Hart

While travelling through the East, I made contact with monks in Tibet, Mongolia, Japan and China. They were serene, modest and reclusive, at peace in their saffron coloured habits. Recently I observed the crowds in Sáo Paulo airport: the waiting room full of executives with mobile phones, worried, anxious, and generally eating more than they should. For sure they had already had breakfast at home, but as the company offered another one, they ate voraciously. This made me reflect: ”which of these two models brings happiness?

Che Guevara: A Birthday Message – vom Befreiungstheologen Frei Betto.

Freitag, 18. Juli 2008 von Klaus Hart

Che Guevara would have been 80 years old on June 14th! His activism in our midst ended when he was 39. However they did not manage to kill him. Today he is more alive than he was during the four decades in which he lived. In fact, it is rare for revolutionaries like Mao and Fidel himself to grow old. Many shed their blood early fertilizing the project of a world of freedom, justice and peace: for example Jesus was 33, Marti was 42, Sandino 38, Zapata 39, Farabundo Marti 38.

Weil sie illegal Atlantischen Regenwald in Nordostbrasilien für Zuckerrohrplantagen abholzten, müssen 24 Zucker- und Ethanolfabriken nun insgesamt rund 50 Millionen Euro Strafe zahlen. Dies entschied am 1. Juli 2008 Brasiliens neuer Umweltminister Carlos Minc. (more…)

Befreiungstheologe Frei Betto: „Abolish the MST, or the unproductive Latifundium?“

Freitag, 18. Juli 2008 von Klaus Hart

One of the great attributes of Lula™s government is the non-criminalising of social movements which were repressed during Fernando Henrique Cardoso™s government even by calling in army troops. If Lula were to treat them as a police matter and not as a political one, he would be condemning his own past.

Befreiungstheologe Frei Betto in Brasilien 2008: „The social control of municipalities“

Donnerstag, 17. Juli 2008 von Klaus Hart

We will be having municipal elections in October this year. Through our vote and our taxes we will be giving employment and power to those who, in our name, must administer the municipality. Pressured by the media, by election propaganda, by friends and family and even by blackmail from election campaigners, many people vote without knowing who the candidates for town councillor or mayor are.
